THE ancient ruins of Halton Castle overlooking Runcorn were brought back to life with a dramatic battle.

More than 1,000 visitors watched Regia Anglorum members re-enact a medieval siege at the famous landmark.

They created a living history camp over the bank holiday weekend.

They turned back the clock to the year 1115, the year Norton Priory was founded.

They lived in medieval tents and dressed in period costume.

Each day saw a battle as the Baron of Halton’s men encountered the Welsh.

The medieval re-enactors answered questions and demonstrated various crafts and weapons.

Claire Broadhurst, activity planner at Norton Priory, which manages the site, said: “Many residents and families came out to see the encampment.

“Visitors said it was great to have a relatively unknown but important historic site brought back to life.

“Everyone seemed to have a really great time, including Regia Anglorum who said they really enjoyed spending the weekend at the castle and speaking to visitors.”

A spokesman for Regia Anglorum said: “For over a quarter of a century we have been creating history for audiences around the world.

“We have skilled, properly equipped and highly motivated men and women of all ages who bring the dull and dead past back to brilliant life, celebrating the very best of life 1,000 years ago.

“We think it is equally important to demonstrate embroidery, how to make flour and bake bread.”

Norton Priory hopes to stage more events at Halton Castle in the future.
