A NEW £3.6 million engineering and construction skills centre has opened at Riverside College.

Students can now train for a variety of careers using the very latest technology and equipment.

During the construction work, an unexpected object was found.

A 60-year-old time capsule was discovered buried underneath the college’s original foundation stone, which had been laid on Wednesday, April 22, 1953.

The unmarked lead box contained two local newspapers, a set of coins, stamps, minutes from a council meeting and a programme from the laying of the foundation stone ceremony.

The 1953 time capsule will soon be on display in the college reception.

A new time capsule, replicating the original, will be buried outside the skills centre.

It will contain various items reflecting the modern day college.

The Mayor of Halton, Cllr Shaun Osborne cut a ribbon to open the skills centre.

Mary Murphy, college principal, said: “The opening event has been a wonderful opportunity for the college to showcase the exceptional facilities and the talented team of staff and students we have at Riverside.

“We are extremely proud of the new Engineering and Construction Skills Centre and look forward to working closely with local employers to create exciting career opportunities for our students.”

Industry employers, council officers, councillors, college governors and school teachers joined VIP guests for the event.

Hugh O’Connor, general manager of Merseylink was the keynote speaker.

He said:“It was a pleasure to be involved in such an exciting occasion for the college.

“I am looking forward to continuing our successful collaboration on employment and skills.”

David Marsden, technical manager of Northern Drives and Controls and a former apprentice at Riverside College and Simon Reed, sector manager of Advanced Manufacturing spoke about the importance of specialist training.

They also outlined future industry plans and various career opportunities available for students.

Simon Reid said: “I applaud the college for its vision and I wish them every success with the venture.

“Every time I visit Riverside I am amazed by the enthusiasm of the staff and the passion they have for their work.

“That came through loud and clear on the site tour. Every tutor we met simply radiated pride in their department.”

An open evening is being held on Thursday, June 18 from 4pm to 7.30pm.

Anyone interested in studying is welcome to visit the new skills centre, meet staff and students and discuss courses.
