YOUNG Widnes footballers are celebrating success after competing against the best school teams across Merseyside.
A team from St Gerard’s RC Primary School in Lugsdale Road travelled to Everton’s training complex at Finch Farm to compete in the Merseyside year four school finals.
A mixture of children from years three and four took part.
They suffered an early setback when their goalkeeper was injured in the warm up and a substitute had to step in but they soon got back into their rhythm.
Jane Gilbert from St Gerard’s, said: “They knew they would be up against some very tough teams from all parts of the county.
“They finished the tournament fourth in their group and eighth out of the 16 best schools in Merseyside which was an excellent result.”
