A RUNCORN housing association is launching specialised training for staff to understand the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rough sleepers.

Riverside is working with Stonewall Housing, the advice and support organisation for LGBT homeless, to deliver the training to address the specific needs and experiences that can lead to people being denied a safe space to live.

John Glenton,Riverside’s director of operations in care and support and chair of Spectrum, the LGBT staff group, said: “It’s really important that those working with rough sleepers are aware of the experiences of LGBT people and the impact that homophobia can have on finding a safe space, once they become homeless.

“We need to develop a greater understanding of the issues that can lead to homelessness, such as domestic abuse, or family rejection because of sexuality or gender identity, in order to fully meet the needs of the community.”

Stonewall Housing launched the training called Finding Safe Spaces in February this year and Riverside is the first in the housing sector to commission it.

Riverside provides a range of services for rough sleepers and accommodation and support for the homeless at centres across the country.

Mr Glenton added: “As a Stonewall top 100 employer we are committed to ensuring that staff can be themselves at work.

“We also extend this commitment so that we are fully equipped to support customers with a range of diverse needs and backgrounds.”
