THE Mayor of Halton shared his knowledge of council democracy with Widnes pupils.

Cllr Shaun Osborne met the student council at SS Peter and Paul Catholic College.

He explained how the council’s committee structure works and outlined the key role of the chairman.

He suggested schoolchildren could follow the example of the local authority and organise themselves into different groups, if they had specific tasks to tackle.

The school council represents the views of students and fosters an environment where everyone feels safe.

They organise charity fundraising events and raise awareness of student activities within the college.

Pupils told the Mayor about their anti-bullying agenda as they are responsible for supporting equality, justice and respect.

Alan Bell, the college’s community cohesion co-ordinator, said: “The meeting was of great value to assist student understanding of council organisation and hierarchy.

“The Mayor invited our student council to visit the council chambers in the near future.”

Student council members include Rachel Irons, Shannon Reeves, Ryan Vickery, Tom Johnson, Matthew Carter, Rebecca Sadler and Amy Jones.
