FRAUDSTERS are trying to con Halton pensioners out of their life savings, a charity has warned.

Halton Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) says scammers, posing as their employer or pension provider are offering bogus ‘free’ financial advice to entice them to move their pension pots.

Some are providing fake investment opportunities, trying to persuade people to buy pricey goods.

Other victims have been tricked into giving their personal details such as their national insurance number or bank account over the phone or email.

In the past year, Halton CAB has helped 104 people with issues relating to financial products or fraud.

The national charity’s new report reveals the financial and emotional toll on pensioners who have lost savings through elaborate cons.

Hitesh Patel, chief executive of Halton Citizens Advice Bureau, said: “Fraudsters can ruin people’s retirement plans by taking a portion or all of a victim’s pension pots.

“Scammers see pensioners as a prime target. There are many people looking to benefit from the new pension rules, including scammers.

“Anyone who feels unsure about a cold call or dodgy offer they have received about their pension should let someone else know, and report it to the authorities.

“People can get help and support from Citizens Advice if they are worried they have been targeted by scammers.”

He said expert guidance from the CAB can help people get to grips with their pension options.

It will equip people with the knowledge of what to look out for to help them avoid falling victim to scams.

Mr Patel added: “Regulators and the authorities must work together to quickly identify scams and stop pension scammers from going on to do more harm.”
