COMEDIAN Eddie Izzard surprised Brookvale residents when he turned up on their doorstep on Saturday.

Tottering along in high heels and wearing bright red lipstick, he was on the campaign trail with Labour’s Weaver Vale general election candidate Julia Tickridge.

Hundreds of fans turned up to see him at Runcorn Shopping Centre as he posed for ‘selfies’ and signed autographs.

Julia Tickridge said: “He caused quite a stir. There was a non stop stream of people wanting to meet him and chat to him.

“He is a lifelong supporter of the Labour party.

“Runcorn has had a hard time and Eddie sent out a strong message of hope.”

She welcomed Labour leader Ed Miliband’s pledge to review road tolls on the new Mersey Gateway and Silver Jubilee bridge.

Launching the party’s election pledges in Warrington, Mr Milliband said: “We won’t make promises to end tolls but I will promise to have a review of the tolls.”

Ms Tickridge said: “People who live in Frodsham and Helsby and work in Widnes don’t understand why they are being treated differently to Halton residents who will have free tolls.

“They cross the bridge for health appointments, education and social trips. Tolls will impact on the family budget.”
