A WIDNES school is in the running to win up to £5,000 towards buying its own solar panels and needs your votes today.

Moorfield Primary School is aiming to raise enough to buy 40 which could earn them around £1,800 annually for the next 20 years.

The school in Halton View has entered a competition run by Good Energy to win one of three cash prizes.

Head teacher Andy Williams said: “We are very proud that children in our school are taking a lead on saving energy.

“As part of Solar Schools project, we are trying to raise £15,000 for the installation of solar panels.

“They will not only help to reduce the school’s carbon footprint, but also save money in the long run.

“Being shortlisted towards that total is very gratifying and just reward for the children’s efforts.”

Artwork created by pupils illustrating what renewable energy means to them is being showcased on the Good Energy Facebook page.

The more ‘likes’ Moorfield’s picture receives, the more votes the school receives.

Pupils have created a living sculpture with children from their eco group and parents.

Teacher Natalie Lynch said: 'It's depicting our journey from green school to 'solar school' and how we have tried to influence and inspire more people within our circle.

“We have the power station - seen from our playground - to act as a constant reminder of our responsibility to live sustainably.”
