ROAD improvements are being carried out to make it easier for people to cross between the shops and the Hive leisure park on Widnes Waterfront.

Three lots of road works start on Monday, March 2 and will last for five days.

The project is being co-ordinated to minimise disruption to town centre businesses and shoppers.

Halton Council is building a pedestrian refuge on Greenoaks Way, the road between Widnes Shopping Park and Aldi to enable pedestrians to cross the road more easily.

Aldi’s contractor, Matrix, will also be carrying out underground electricity cabling work at the store entrance.

During the roadworks, Greenoaks Way will be closed in one direction to allow traffic to get into the Greenoaks car parks from Lugsdale Road roundabout.

Traffic leaving Greenoaks will have to go via Bradley Way and Marzahn Way or Robert Street and Deacon Road.

A Halton Council spokesman said: “This one way system is the least disruptive to businesses and motorists, as all traffic will still be able to get to the shops.

“It is also designed to cause the minimum disruption to bus services. All services bound for Widnes town centre will be unaffected, coming through the one way only system.”

Leaving Greenoaks bus station, all services will be diverted via Deacon Road and Kingsway.

This only affects two bus stops:

• The outbound stop in Gerrard Street (opposite M&S) will be closed for five days.

• The outbound stop at Asda will be relocated to Kingsway (outside the former court building) and passengers redirected there.
