THE economic recovery hasn’t reached Runcorn, says Labour’s Weaver Vale election candidate.

Julia Tickridge says the closure of Tesco is a sign that residents are still struggling financially.

She recently spoke to the company’s corporate affairs boss and was told that the store was making an annual loss of almost £90,000.

Mrs Tickridge said: “The fact that a major employer selling food is feeling the pinch in Runcorn indicates a key issue with regard to the economic recovery.

“Food is an absolute essential. Everyone has to buy it.

“When a major employer like Tesco is making a loss it flies in the face of what the Conservatives are telling us about the economic recovery.”

She has opened a campaign office at Runcorn Shopping Centre, staffed by volunteers.

Linguist Mrs Tickridge, who speaks German, Italian, French, Russian, Spanish and Dutch, added: “I wanted to be right at the heart of the community.

“I want to be responsive to people’s needs.

"Should I be elected in May, I will have my constituency office in the shopping centre."
