A HOUSE in Widnes whose tenants were causing disorder and nuisance to the community has been shut down.

Officers from Widnes Neighbourhood Policing Unit have used new powers from the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014 to issue a closure order at 9 Brookdale, Hough Green.

It was applied for in partnership with Halton Housing Trust and approved by a judge at Runcorn Magistrates Court this morning.

Inspector Michael Evans from Widnes Neighbourhood Policing Unit said: "Following a number of incidents at this address we made a decision to issue a closure order for the benefit and wellbeing of other residents in the local community.

"This closure order reinforces the commitment that the police and partner agencies have in targeting those people that undermine our communities and bring misery to residents through their involvement in illegal drugs and anti-social behaviour."

The Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Police Act 2014 came into force in October 2014 and means that officers are now able to apply for closure orders at premises where somebody is, or has been, causing distress or nuisance.

The order prevents anyone from accessing the property for three months.

Anyone who enters is liable to arrest and up to six months′ prison, or a £5,000 fine, or both.

Noel Sharpe, executive director of customer services at Halton Housing Trust said: "Halton Housing Trust′s anti social behaviour team and Cheshire Police worked in partnership to gather evidence over a lengthy period of time in order to take this action.

"All our customers deserve to feel safe and free from intimidation and danger.

"We hope that this closure order sends out a warning to our customers and those living in our communities that we won′t hesitate to take action if we encounter any incidents of anti-social behaviour."

Inspector Evans added: "We would like to thank local residents who have provided intelligence and information which has made today′s action possible.

"Quality of life for our community is of paramount importance; our action in this instance has demonstrated our commitment.

"I urge anyone who is concerned about anti-social behaviour and drug related crime in their community to contact us on 101."

Alternatively residents can report information anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
