AN asbestos-ridden dilapidated building could soon be transformed into new apartments.

Absolute Living Developments is seeking planning permission to convert the former Department of Employment offices into 448 self-contained flats.

The six storey property, built in the 1960s has been lying dormant for many years.

It has been subject to crime and vandalism.

Arsonists have torched the East House Building in East Lane, beside Runcorn Shopping City on numerous occasions.

Firefighters have described it as “a very hazardous building” because of the presence of asbestos in the walls, floors and ceilings and unsafe floors.

A London-based developer now plans to extensively renovate the property to create 54 one-bedroom flats and 394 studio flats.

The company believes the new look modern accommodation would attract graduates, single people and key workers.

It could provide accommodation for construction workers building the Mersey Gateway and medical staff at the neighbouring Halton Hospital.

A spokesman for Absolute Living Developments said: “It would inject vitality and generate a new identity for the area and create custom for shops and services.”

The company believes the regeneration of the three-acre site would boost trade at neighbouring shops and businesses.

Every effort will be made to ensure residents feel safe and protected.

A swipe card system and visitor intercom will prohibit intruders and there are plans to instal CCTV and exterior lighting around the building.

There are 60 car parking spaces and more pay and display bays are available for visitors.

Residents are invited to comment on the proposed development until Monday, February 9.
