A husband and wife team has raised more than £3,000 for a hospice after completing a gruelling bike ride.

Martin and Karen Evans and their friend Fiona Buckley cycled from Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam to Siem Reap in Cambodia in just six days.

The trio said the road conditions and suffocating humidity made the 400km marathon tough going.

Martin, aged 48, from Warrington, finance director of the Pesto restaurant in Widnes, said: “Unfortunately as many of the roads were in a poor state of repair there were quite a few crashes along the way, but thankfully everyone managed to finish the course.

“In the 35 degree heat and with 85 per cent humidity the long days, cycling for hours on end, definitely took their toll, but it really was a huge achievement when we finally crossed that finish line at Angkor Wat.”

The Birchfield Road restaurant group agreed to match-fund any money donated by Pesto employees which has resulted in a company contribution of almost £800.

Karen, who works as a pharmacist at Warrington Hospital, has also received numerous donations from staff.

Martin added: “We’ve been truly astounded at the generosity of people who have come forward to support our cause.

“Initially we were hoping to raise about £1,500 so to have doubled that is unbelievable.

“We want to thank everyone for their help and support as we know this money means a lot to the hospice and will help them continue the fantastic work they do.”

They donated the money to The Hospice of the Good Shepherd cares for 1,500 people from across Chester, Deeside and Cheshire.
