POLICE are appealing for information after a man tried to snatch a woman's handbag as she walked next to a churchyard in Widnes.

The attempted robbery happened at around 11.50pm on Saturday, December 13.

The victim, a 47-year-old woman, was walking along Greenway Road near the entrance to the grounds of St John′s Church when she was approached by a man.

He began chatting to her, but then tried to snatch her handbag.

She managed to keep hold of the bag, but in the struggle fell over, causing minor injuries to her arms.

The offender is described as a white man, around 5ft 6ins tall, of slim build, with mousey brown hair and a local accent.

He was wearing dark jeans, black trainers with white sides to the soles, a grey baseball-style jacket with white sleeves, and gloves.
