Widnes Market is holding a ‘cash mob’ to celebrate small business Saturday on Saturday 6 December.

More than 200 traders are appealing to Halton shoppers to help to make it a success.

The idea, part of a national campaign, is to encourage people to use small businesses that support the local economy.

Stallholders are urging shopers to spend £10 or more in the market by visiting between 11am and 12.30pm on Saturday and taking a 'selfie' of their purchase.

Halton Cllr Ron Hignett, board member for physical environment, said: "If we can get an extra 1000 people through the door, that would be £10,000 spent locally, which in turn means the money will be spent by the traders on other goods in the area.

"Money spent locally in small shops and businesses stays local. If you spend it in the big high street chains or supermarkets, the money disappears out of the Borough.

Widnes Market is asking that people to visit their Facebook site facebook.com/widnesmarket and pledge to attend the event.

Butcher Clive Middlehurst, said: “The more we get to pledge, the more likely others are to do the same.”

People can show their support by taking a selfie with their purchase and post it with the hashtag #widnesmarketcashmob.

Widnes Market has long been known as a supporter of independent businesses, owned by people who live in the community.

Widnes and Runcorn town centres are home to many independent traders, including award winning booksellers, unique craft and specialist shops, all serving the community.
