A CHARITY inspired by a courageous young cancer victim has celebrated its fifth birthday.

Mark Gorry, aged 23, from Widnes died in 2009 from testicular cancer.

His widow, Leah, vowed to fulfil her husband’s dream and raise £1 million for Clatterbridge Centre of Oncology.

So far, the Mark Gorry Foundation (MGF) has raised £183,459 and a further £1,600 was collected at a presentation night in Parklands to thank volunteers and supporters.

Former Mayor of Halton Keith Morley, who helped to raise £6,000 for the charity during his mayoral year was among the 130 guests.

Dan Lloyd, the charity’s chairman, said: “The evening was a true celebration of the spirit of MGF.

“Yes, there were occasional tears, but there was much more laughter.”

The charity’s partners, Richard Bamber from Anthony’s Travel, Richard Wilding from Wild Bikes and Chicks & Wheels were given special awards.

Mark’s best friend, Mark Bignall, from Beechwood, Runcorn, thanked volunteers who have spoken to 4,000 people in their awareness campaign.

Seven lads dropped their trousers on TV, appearing on Channel 4’s medical programme ‘Embarrassing Bodies’ to show men how easy it is to check their testicles.
