A TEENAGE swimmer who competed for team GB in the Youth Olympics in Bejing has been honoured by the Mayor of Halton.

Georgina Evans, aged 19, from Hale Village was invited to a reception at Runcorn Town Hall with her parents, Geoff and Cathy.

She only started swimming competitively when she was 10 and has won a galaxy of medals.

In 2012, she swam at the Olympic trials in London, finishing 10th in 100 metre breaststroke.

In 2013, she competed for GB in the World Junior Swimming Championships in Dubai. She finished sixth in the 100 metres breaststroke and won silver in the girls’ relay.

She came fourth this year in the 100 metres breaststroke at the Commonwealth Games trials in Glasgow.

Her dad, Geoff, of Arklow Close, said: “When she joined Garston swimming club they recognised that she was good at breast stroke.

“She has never looked back.

“We are very proud of her.”

Dedicated Georgina trained for two hours every day after school.

When she was preparing for big competitions, she had to get up at dawn and practice from 6am to 8am as well.

Geoff added: “She has been very successful in the junior and youth competitions.

“She did very well in China. She won a silver medal with the relay team and made every final as an individual.

“It was a great experience for her as staying in a village with all the other GB athletes and competing against swimmers from all over the world.”

The Mayor, Clr Shaun Osborne said: “Georgina’s achievements have been immense.

“I am proud to have young people like her in Halton, setting such a good example to us all.

“I will look at ways Halton Council can help her to achieve even more.”

Georgina, who is studying for her A levels, said: “It was lovely meeting the Mayor and being welcomed to Runcorn Town Hall.

“I didn’t realise what a lovely building it was.”
