LEARNING to play a musical instrument gives children confidence and improves their behaviour, says a Widnes head teacher.

Pupils at St Gerard’s Catholic Primary School in Lugsdale Road have had violin lessons for five years.

Some are now being taught how to master the flute.

Head teacher Karl Landrum said: “I think music is very important.

“It’s about giving children an experience, enriching their lives.

“It improves their confidence and behaviour.

“They all work together as a team.

“We provide instruments free so that every child regardless of their background can learn. Parents are very supportive.”

The young musicians have performed at various venues including The Halle in Manchester.

Mr Landrum said: “It was a real experience for our children.

“Some had never been to a concert before. They absolutely loved it.

“I believe they deserve the best opportunities.”

Pupils start violin lessons in year three and are taught how to read music when they are older.

Weekly tuition is provided by Halton and Warrington Music Hub.
