PLANS to move Widnes police station into the town centre have won strong support from residents.

Cheshire Police and Crime Commissioner John Dwyer has now agreed in principle to relocate the station to John Briggs House in Gerrard Street.

In public consultation, 94 per cent of people agreed that it was a suitable location and 97 per cent said it was more accessible.

Mr Dwyer said, "I am delighted that there is public support for the move as the current police station is not fit for purpose.

“ I now need to continue talks with Halton Council to discuss some of the details which will be progressed over the next few months.

"The proposed new premises will still continue to host a help desk for the public but is much more suitable for policing needs.

“I am committed to ensuring that there is a visible policing presence in Widnes town centre."

Cheshire Police says the existing police station in Kingsway is run-down and too large for the needs of the Widnes neighbourhood team.

It would cost around £2 million to renovate the building to a modern standard. Currently the constabulary cannot afford this sum.

Police say John Briggs House is within five minutes walk of the old station but closer to the town centre and bus routes.

It has parking for visitors and personnel and can provide access to the technology needed for modern day policing.

Front desk opening hours and services to the public would not be affected by the relocation.

Residents responded to the survey in September.
