FASCINATING details about what makes each person unique were revealed at a talk in Widnes.

Author Gill Arbuthnott ran a workshop and did a reading from her book entitled ‘What Makes You, You?’ at Catalyst Science Discovery Centre.

The book has been shortlisted for the Royal Society Young People’s Book Prize 2014.

Catalyst in Mersey Road, West Bank, was thrilled to host the event which was attended by lots of families and special guest, David Chapman from The Royal Society.

Gill’s book is an introduction to DNA, the molecule that holds the secret of life itself.

Meryl Jameson, Catalyst marketing manager, said:”Gill explained what DNA is, how it works, what we can do with it.

“With help from the audience she demonstrated how you can extract DNA from strawberries.

“Visitors also had the chance to make their own DNA bracelets.”

Each year, publishers across the UK submit their best, recent books that communicate science to young people and an adult judging panel narrow down the choice to a shortlist of six books.

The winning book is selected entirely by groups of young people from over 100 schools and youth groups across the UK.

This year the winner will be announced in November 2014.
