NEW homes are set to be built on the site of a former dilapidated Runcorn pub.

A £1.6 million investment from Liverpool Housing Trust and £378,000 funding from the Homes and Communities Agency aims to breathe new life into Murdishaw.

The derelict Jolly Brewer was demolished four years ago after a spate of arson attacks by vandals.

Plans to construct 18 rented properties have been unveiled.

Halton Clr Ron Hignett, board member for physical environment, said: “The council has been working with local partners to find a permanent solution for this site.

“Liverpool Housing Trust’s proposals not only bring the vacant site back into beneficial use but also help improve the wider area.

“The proposed new car park for Murdishaw shops would help support these businesses by creating a safer and more attractive environment.

“We welcome this investment and hope it acts as a catalyst for further improvements to the neighbourhood. We will work with all our partners to try to achieve this.”

Residents are invited to help shape the proposals at an information event from 3pm to 7pm on Thursday, October 9 at Murdishaw Community Centre, Barnfield Avenue, Murdishaw WA7 6EP.

LHT and Halton Council want to hear residents’ views before an application for outline planning permission is submitted.

Peter Broad, project manager for LHT said: “We are delighted to be drawing up these plans which will help to transform the area.

“The site has long been identified as having the potential to provide new homes and meet demands for more affordable properties in Murdishaw.”

The consultation session is the start of a long process which will involve getting the site fully ready for redevelopment and appointing a constructor.

Residents who have any queries about the consultation event or the development plans can call LHT on 0300 555 0131.
