A CHEMICAL company is waiting to be sentenced after admitting discharging a corrosive substance into the Manchester Ship Canal in Runcorn.

Ineos Chlor Vinyls has pleaded guilty to spilling caustic soda at the landing stages of the canal off Percival Lane on January 17, 2012.

An Environment Agency spokesman has confirmed that this is part of an ongoing prosecution.

A spokesman for Ineos Chlor Vinyls said: "On June 11, 2014 Ineos ChlorVinyls Limited pleaded guilty to one charge of polluting the Manchester Ship Canal. "This relates to an incident in January 2012, whereby a spill of caustic soda lasting less than 60 seconds occurred when a filtration device failed during ship loading.

“Ineos regrets the event and takes such matters very seriously.

"The impact of the spill on the canal was found to be minor, and steps have been taken to ensure that the event cannot be repeated."

No date has been set yet for the company to be sentenced.

The case will be dealt with at Chester Crown Court.
