FUN and laughter erupted at Wade Deacon School in Widnes as staff were challenged to eat as much as they could in five minutes.

Eighteen teachers, dinner ladies and admin workers took part in the Bruce Bogtrotter cake eating challenge to celebrate Roald Dahl’s life.

Around 500 pupils voted for the final three, teachers Luke McCabe and Danny Boyle and school caretaker John Russell to re-enact a famous scene from the story Matilda.

They copied Bruce Bogtrotter who was forced to eat a huge cake and then exploded.

They stuffed their faces with giant jam sponges donated by Morrisons and decorated by the school’s catering team.

Mr McCabe won the competition which raised £75 for Widnes Foodbank.

Caretaker Mr Russell said: “I would have liked more than five minutes to be honest and was only really getting into my stride when the hooter sounded.

“It was great to be involved and to know that all the money raised will go to such a such a worthwhile cause.”
