DOCTORS are urging Halton residents to take greater control of their health as autumn heralds the start of coughs and colds.

Around one in four people will visit the GP or A&E for common winter ailments such as cold or flu, yet there is very little they can do, as antibiotics won’t help.

Instead patients who are generally fit and healthy are advised to save time, avoid a wasted trip to the GP and look after themselves at home by visiting their pharmacy.

Dr John Hussey, medical director for NHS England (Merseyside) said: “Most people are unaware that it can take up to 10 days, sometimes longer before you start to feel better after a bout of cold or flu.

"Another common misconception is that antibiotics from the GP can make it better but the best advice for common coughs, colds and sore throats is to rest and drink plenty of fluids.

"Your local pharmacy can also offer advice about medications which can help ease symptoms."

“People are invited to visit a new website, treatyourselfbetter.co.uk which busts common myths and provides information about coughs, colds, sore throats and flu and advises the best way on self-treating winter ailments, how long you can expect symptoms to last and warning signs to look out for.
