More than 1,000 visitors explored ancient Norton Priory and Halton Castle free of charge.

Both Runcorn tourist attractions welcomed familes as part of heritage day.

A Saxon woman, Tudor lady, Victorian housemaid and 1940s housewife brought history to life at the castle.

There were also mini wooden knights hiding in the ruins.

More than 400 visitors discovered mysteries and stories about the Normans who built the castle whilst 800 met medieval interpreters who spoke about the past life of the Priory.

Susan Mackell who organised the event said: “It was great to see so many families enjoying the chance to explore Halton Castle and having a free day out at Norton Priory Museum and Gardens.

“One of the highlights was watching as all the children lined up on the grass as the barn owl from Vale Falconry flew over sweeping across their heads.”

A ranger led guided walks between the Priory and the castle and free shuttle buses ferried people between both sites.
