YOUNG street dancers who have revived the ancient art of morris dancing have been awarded £6,590 from the Big Lottery.

The Widiwig Denettes say the cash will help them to enter more competitions and expand.

More than 40 young people meet at CRMZ youth centre in Widnes have re-vamped this traditional pastime.

They still wear bells on their shoes but have choreographed their moves to match the latest hits.

Widnes mums Joanne Woods, aged 47, and Mandy Mercer, aged 37, from Squires Avenue, who danced together as children formed the group.

Joanne said: “This grant will help us to grow, continue to enter competitions and provide the necessary equipment.

“When we started we had no idea it would take off as it has.

“The enthusiasm shown by the young people has been infectious.

“They’ve grown in confidence and self-esteem.

“We have member with disabilities including cerebral palsy and one girl is registered as blind.

“Morris dancing is a great way for young people to keep fit while socialising with their peers.”
