THE prosecution of a teenage driver who has been charged following the death of a one-year-old baby boy at a Runcorn travellers’ site is being urgently reviewed.
Douglas Doherty, aged 19, of Rilshaw Lane, Winsford, appeared at Halton Magistrates Court in Runcorn on Thursday, September 4, charged with causing death while driving a vehicle uninsured.
The incident happened at the travellers’ site on Warrington Road on Tuesday, September 2.
A spokesperson for the Crown Prosecution Service Mersey-Cheshire said today: “This case was initially charged by Cheshire Police based on the information available at the time.
“The Crown Prosecution Service has a duty to review all cases that have been charged without reference to them, in accordance with the Code for Crown Prosecutors.
“The circumstances around this tragic case are currently being reviewed as a matter of urgency to decide what is the best way to proceed.”
Doherty was remanded on bail until September 22.
