A BIG Dig fun day is being held to help restore the old town.
Unlock Runcorn campaigners believe re-opening the canal, which was made a dead end when the Silver Jubilee bridge was built, could boost business and create jobs.
Now, as traffic will be diverted to the Mersey Gateway, feeder roads are being dismantled paving the way to restore the canal link.
Opening up the five locks could attract thousands of boaters into Runcorn and breathe new life into shops, pubs and restaurants.
Campaigners are hosting a family fun day from 11am to 5pm on Sunday, August 31 at Wat Phra Singh car park, 88 High Street WA7 1JH.
There will be a bouncy castle, face painting and lots of other fun events.
Halton MP Derek Twigg and MEP Theresa Griffin will join volunteers to launch the Big Dig.
