TWO teenager players from Halton Baseball and Softball Club are playing for Great Britain in a challenging 10 day gold medal tournament in America.

Owen Williams, aged 16, and Matt Moran, aged 14, flew to Florida on Thursday .

They will play 15 three hour games against teams including America, Canada, Mexico, Italy, Germany, Venezuela and Puerto Rico.

Owen's dad, Paul, aged 41, a project manager from Pinners Fold, Runcorn, and a coach at the club, said: "Owen has been playing since he was six. He is 100 per cent focussed and really committed.

"He has been playing in the GB squad for four years and wants to become the first player to be selected for the US major league programme."

Matt's dad, Alan, aged 47, from Billinge, the club's general manager for junior teams, said: "I am over the moon for him. This is the trip of a lifetime.

"Matt has been playing for five years. He is very quick and very strong. He was in the GB team last year but they didn't tour.

"This is a great life experience. Major league scouts will be at the tournament."

The club, which has two pitches in Barnfield Avenue, Murdishaw, has around 50 players in different age groups and is hoping to recruit more children.

Mr Moran said: "We are hoping to go into Halton schools and do some coaching and start an inter-school tournament.

"Baseball is for boys and girls.

"We welcome children and adults whatever their ability .

"Halton has historically put lots of players in the GB teams."
