BRIOCHE, baguettes and pain au chocolat were on the menu at a Widnes school.

Year five students at St Basil’s in Hough Green, Widnes wore black berets and striped t-shirts to serve a continental breakfast.

The event was held to launch their new French curriculum.

Julie Lindop, modern foreign languages co-ordinator, said: “We wanted to raise awareness of the language, culture and traditions of France.

“They were given a little taste of everything.

“We don’t want it to be all out of text books. We want to widen their horizons so they are aware of other countries.”

Pupils were taught a few phrases so that they could start speaking French, which will be taught to pupils in years three to six from September.

Younger children will will be introduced to the language through songs, ryhmes and games.
