A 56-year-old Widnes company director has been arrested in connection with a suspected £11 million tobacco smuggling fraud.

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) officers searched a private address in Widnes on Tuesday, June 24.

They seized computers, phones and business records relating to the fraud.

HMRC officers, accompanied by the Police Service of Northern Ireland, also searched addresses in the south Armagh area yesterday, June 25.

The arrest follows the seizure of 32 million illicit cigarettes and nearly five tonnes of shisha tobacco by officers from the Revenue’s Customs Service and the An Garda Siochana in Drogheda on Tuesday.

The smuggling attempt involved millions of cigarettes and tobacco destined for the hidden economy in both the UK and Ireland.

Mike Parkinson, assistant director criminal investigation HMRC, said: “Excise fraud is not a victimless crime. Working together in partnership with our colleagues in the Republic of Ireland and the Organised Crime Task Force, we can target global criminal networks more effectively and leave those involved with nowhere to hide.

“Cigarette smuggling is organised crime on a global scale. The gangs behind this form of criminality are motivated solely by greed and personal gain.

“Their criminality costs the UK taxpayer alone around £2 billion per year in unpaid duty, and smuggling of this magnitude could devastate our local economies.

The man was interviewed by HMRC and has been released on bail.

Investigations are continuing.

And how is that different from every multinational company? People work for money, why is that surprising, and how would it have made the crime less of a problem if gangs were motivated by philanthropic causes?

Smuggling- as in he provided a product cheaper from a government that didn't tax the population senseless to people in a government that taxes the population senseless. Sounds like a multinational corporation to me.

How much of your goods are made in China & India? Do you tax a crap out of them too? Oh, you don't. See, there's your problem. Stop socially engineering through taxation and people won't have to smuggle that junk in their underwear. Taxing practicing christians in muslim Countries is legal too. It doesn't make it right.
