WIDNES Foodbank is holding a collection at Tesco Extra in Widnes.

Volunteers will be at the store in Lugsdale Road on Friday, July 4 and Saturday, July 5, from 9am to 5pm.

The charity says more families than ever are turning to them for emergency rations.

Volunteer manager of Widnes Foodbank, mum-of-four Clare Bedford, aged 44, from Farnworth, said: “Life is tough for many people due to economic conditions, but some people are really struggling, even to put food on the table.

“An increasing number of people are coming to us. Many are working but just not earning enough to cover the essentials.

“Widnes Foodbank is operated through the christian churches in Widnes but relies on the very generous donation of food from local people.

“The mission of the foodbank is to ensure no one goes hungry in Widnes.”
