POLICE taking part in ′Operation Brazil′ today praised the good behaviour of fans during the first weekend of the World Cup.

Patrols were increased on Saturday, as England took on Italy, to proactively target those involved in alcohol-related crime, domestic abuse, drink driving and anti-social behaviour.

No football related arrests were made on the day although there were three arrests for drink driving during the evening. A further drink driving arrest was also made the following day.

Ch Supt Sarah Boycott, who is leading the operation, said: "Our officers were out in force on Saturday to ensure that any issues were tackled early on and to send a clear message to would-be troublemakers that bad behaviour would not be tolerated.

"We were pleased with the way that fans conducted themselves, despite the result for England. We will continue to work hard throughout the tournament period to ensure everyone can enjoy themselves without having to worry about their personal safety."

Officers will continue to target drink driving across the county during the World Cup.

Roads policing Inspector Richard Hill said: "We′re advising fans who are planning to go out and have a drink while they watch the football to look at walking, taking a taxi or nominating a designated driver among their friends.

"Whilst we want people to enjoy themselves during the World Cup, we are urging both drivers and passengers to take responsibility for their own road safety by making the right choice, the safer choice.

"We are also keen to remind people to consider how long it actually takes for their bodies to remove the alcohol. This is particularly pertinent with some of the late matches in this year′s World Cup. Many people do not realise how long it actually takes for their body to process alcohol. If you drink the night before and drive the following day you might still be over the limit."

Anyone who suspects that someone is drinking and driving should call Cheshire Police on 101 or for further information visit cheshire.police.uk.
