CROWDS gathered in Victoria Park, Widnes for a service of commemoration to mark the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings.
War veterans joined church leaders, civic dignitaries and members of the public to pay tribute to fallen heroes.
Halton MP Derek Twigg, Halton Council leader Clr Rob Polhill, former Mayor of Halton Clr Margaret Ratcliffe and many councillors attended the service.
Clr Polhill said: “It was really good that so many people turned out for this important commemoration.
“So many people gave their lives for us, fighting for our freedom. We couldn’t do what we do today, but for them. We have to remember that.”
Normandy veteran Ron Ball laid a wreath at the cenotaph.
The service was led by Rev Janice Collier and organised by Co-operative Funeralcare in Widnes.
