CHILDREN are invited to dress up as fairies and elves at this year’s Runcorn Town Carnival as the festivities fall on the summer solstice.

Youngsters can ride on a mystical float which leaves Mersey Road at 11am on Saturday, June 21 to the showground at Heath Park.

The centenary of World War One is the event’s other theme.

Veterans and cadets are joining forces with the Royal British Legion to commemorate 100 years since the outbreak of the Great War.

A samba band, dance troupes, Cheshire Constabulary Band and schools will join the cavalcade.

Organisers expect the carnival to the biggest since it was revived in 2010.

Volunteer committee co-ordinator Linda Warrington, who has five children and five grandchildren, said: “We want to bring generations together. I remember my dad used to take me the carnival. I used to sit in the float wagon he drove. It was really exciting. Hopefully it’s going back that way again.

“Everyone has made a great effort. Loads of businesses and shops have given us prizes.”

Highlights include a birds of prey demonstration, circus workshop, fairground, puppet show, zumba and pilates displays, dog competition, information stands and stalls.

Around 15 bands will perform live.

An ice hockey team from Silver Blades and Runcorn Spartans American football team will be taking part.

Children wishing to join the solstice float can call Shanice Warrington on 07462 160378 or e-mail runcorn@haltonexchange.co.uk. Costumes can be provided.

Free parking is available at The Heath Business and Technical Park.
