THE ancient tradition of morris dancing has been given a modern twist for young street dancers.

The Widiwig Denettes still wear bells on their shoes but have choreographed their moves to match the latest hits.

Widnes mums Joanne Woods, aged 47, and Mandy Mercer, aged 37, from Squires Avenue, who danced together as children, have recruited 40 youngsters at the CRMZ youth centre.

They teach all levels of morris dancing and have won countless medals since they started a year ago.

Joanne said: “People really grow in confidence and self esteem. We have members with disabilities including cerebral palsy and one girl is registered blind.

“Morris dancing is a great way to keep fit.”

The group received a starter grant from Halton Council and support to seek further funding.

New recruits can join rehearsals on Wednesdays at 6pm or call Joanne on 07516 312322 or Mandy on 07917 563939.
