A RUNCORN man arrested for attempted rape has been released on police bail.

The 26-year-old was questioned by detectives following a serious sexual assault on a 26-year-old woman.

The victim left a bar in High Street and was walking along the bus way near Irwell Lane, when she was attacked.

The assault happened at around 3am on Saturday, April 5.

The suspect has been released on police bail until May, pending further inquiries.

Detectives are still carrying out an investigation following the incident.

A Cheshire Police spokesman said: “The victim has been left traumatised by this incident and is currently being supported by specially trained officers.

“A man has been arrested for attempted rape and released on police bail.”

The police are appealing to anyone who may have been in the area at the time to come forward.
