A series of bangs heard in Widnes has led to a police investigation.

Residents in the Somerville Road area feared that some kind of weapon had been discharged.

Police officers made a thorough search but found nothing and today renewed their appeal for information.

Chief Inspector Chief Inspector Kev Bennett said: "At this stage, there is no physical evidence that a weapon has been discharged in the local area but clearly residents are concerned about what has happened and we are taking those concerns extremely seriously.

“We have been in the area and will continue with our enquiries and provide reassurance to the local community. This will continue as we make further searches and speak to more people.

"I would urge anyone with any information about what has happened to get in touch. We have already spoken to a lot of people but there may be others that have not yet come forward and we would urge them to get in touch."

Officers are currently carrying out house-to-house enquiries and still searching the area.

The bangs were heard on the evening of Wednesday, March 26.

Anyone with information is urged to call Cheshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously on 0800 555 111.
