A MUCH-RESPECTED Mayor and honorary freeman from Widnes has been honoured.

Former Deputy Lieutenant for Cheshire, John Collins was a district, borough and county councillor, serving as Mayor of Widnes from 1961-62.

His widow, Rona, of Shelley Road, and deputy Mayor, Clr Shaun Osborne unveiled a commemorative plaque at Cronton Sixth Form College, which he helped to establish.

College principal Mary Murphy said: “This was a wonderful event. It was lovely to hear about how John had fought for the sixth form.

“It was an honour to remember someone who started this college that we are all so proud of.”

Family and friends of 90-year-old Mr Collins, who died last September, attended the ceremony.

Student Jack Austin played a grand piano, donated to the college by the Collins’ family.
