A THIEF who stole a bath mat from Mark and Spencer’s only took it because she needed a new one, a court heard.
Karen Marie Rosenthal, aged 51, from Liverpool, pleaded guilty to theft at Halton Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.
She was seen by staff putting the bath mat into a bag on January 23 at M&S on Widnes Shopping Park.
The court heard the defendant said she did not steal it to sell to buy drink or drugs, but because she wanted to use it.
She also took food, with the haul worth £57.34.
Rosenthal, who has previous convictions for theft going back to 2008, was sentenced to a 12-month community order, and fined. She owes £811 for previous fines.
