A SCHEME which helps vulnerable people feel safe in Runcorn has been handed more than £4,000.

Police & Crime Commissioner for Cheshire, John Dwyer has awarded £4,329 to the charity Halton Speak Out for Safe in Town to help vulnerable people in Runcorn.

The Safe in Town scheme sees vulnerable residents carry a card with the contact details of their family or carer and offer safe havens for them if they feel threatened.

It would also see their family or carer contacted when they enter those safe havens.

Mal Hampson, from Halton Speak Out said: "Halton Speak Out is delighted to be part of this scheme. Working alongside our partners we hope to ensure that members of our community feel safe when out and about in Halton.

“We have seen how much this scheme has meant to our most venerable residents during its pilot stage and we know this funding from the Police and Crime Commissioner and Halton’s Clinical Commissioning Group for this scheme will make Halton a safer place for all.”

John Dwyer added: “Vulnerable people, such as people with learning disabilities, often worry about crime and lack confidence to go out into their local communities, resulting in isolation.”
