A MAN suffered a fractured eye socket and broken nose in a serious assault in Widnes town centre.

The 49-year-old victim was left unconscious with facial injuries after the attack near the Imperial pub in Albert Road.

Detectives today appealed for information.

DC Richard Kirby said: "It is believed that there were a number of people in the area at the time who may have witnessed what happened and I am urging them to come forward."

The assault happened at around 1am on Sunday, December 22.

The victim was assaulted as he walked along Albert Road, near the junction of Robert Street.

He was treated in hospital.

A 27-year-old man from Runcorn has been arrested and charged in connection with the incident.
