A COMMEMORATIVE tree has been planted at a Widnes school to celebrate its half century.

Pupils, teachers and governors at Moorfield Primary School in Halton View gathered in the playground for the historic ceremony.

Head teacher Andy Williams said: “We did not want our 50th birthday to pass by without celebrating it. The planting of a ceremonial tree to commemorate 50 years is another landmark day in our short history.

“I think in many ways we all take the work of schools very much for granted, yet the world over they do a magnificent job in serving their communities and helping children enjoy the experience of growing up. I remember my school days with great fondness and want Moorfield pupils to have those same joys.”

Brian Jones, chairman of governors, planted the tree as the longest current serving member of the school with more than 23 years’ association. He was helped by the school's youngest pupil, Isaac Eyo.
