YOUNG patients in Whiston Hospital were thrilled to meet their sporting heroes.
Stars from local sports clubs surprised youngsters in the children’s wards with unexpected gifts.
Rugby players from Widnes Vikings and St Helens, and footballers from Everton and Liverpool spent time chatting to children and their families.
They handed out goodies including hats, flags, calendars, and selections boxes.
Sally Duce, directorate manager and lead nurse, children’s and young people’s department said: “The children and young people were really excited to see their local rugby and football heroes.
“I’m sure that many of the children’s families and the staff enjoyed the visits too.
“It’s extremely kind of the players to visit and spend time with those in hospital over the festive period.
“We all wish the players a merry Christmas and a healthy and happy New Year.”
