HALTON residents are being warned to watch out for unsolicited calls urging you to take out household insurance policies.

A man reported receiving a phone call from a company saying that his boiler cover had expired.

As he didn't have any such cover he didn't agree to renew the policy.

A spokesman for Halton Trading Standards said: “Companies will often cold call you and suggest that the cover you have with them for your Sky box or some home appliance is about to expire and offer to renew it for you.

“If you receive such a call, first check who your current policy is with and when it is due to expire. If you want to renew your cover, look around for the best deal and contract with a company that you have chosen, not one that just happens to call you.

“Don’t give out any of your personal details unless you have confirmed the identity of the caller.”
