A MOMENTOUS achievement in the history of Widnes RLFC has been captured by a rugby fan.

Dennis O’Neill, an acclaimed young star made history with a brilliant 75-yard try he scored on his debut for the Lancashire county side at Naughton Park in January 1968.

Retired Widnes postman Anthony Quinn describes the magical moment in ‘The Greatest Try’.

He has received so many enquiries after his first book, published in 2008 sold out, he has compiled a re-edited 108-page version.

Anthony, aged 58, of Coronet Way, Ditton, said: “It is a chronicle of Widnes RLFC in the late 1960s and 1970s.

“It is well interspersed with pictures and the layout is much better with all the facts at the end of each chapter.

“It is much easier to read.”

Musician Anthony, who plays guitar and keyboard, followed the team until 1995.

His book, priced £10, is available from Holland and Co Chartered Accountants, 102 Widnes Road or from Anthony by calling him on 0151 420 2334.
