CHILDREN are leaving a legacy for future generations after creating a mini forest of 400 trees.

Every pupil and teacher at Farnworth CE Primary School in Widnes planted a tree in their Pit Lane grounds.

Head teacher Jackie Stillings said: “This gives a great opportunity for the whole school to play a part in helping our Forest School develop further still, giving them real ownership of the project.

“We are indebted to the Woodlant Trust who have supported this initiative by donating a sapling for every child in the schoo.”

Teacher Mark Seed, a trained Forest Schools practitioner is leading the project.

The concept was developed in Denmark and Sweden to link education to outdoor play and learning in a wooded environment.

Halton Clr Ged Philbin, board member for children, said: “More and more research shows positive impacts in terms of behaviour, learning and wellbeing linked to outdoor activities.

“There is an increasing number of Forest Schools in Britain, we believe this is the first of its kind in Halton.”
