Halton community group learns new creative skills
OLDER people have discovered how to capture imaginative pictures on their digital cameras.
Members of the Years Ahead group have mastered lots of new skills on a six week course led by acclaimed photographer Andrew Williams.
They have learnt all about composition, colour and light and can even edit their own photographs using Photoshop.
The course is one of a number of activites funded by a grant from Awards for All.
The group meets at the Acorn Centre in Castlefields, Runcorn.
A knit & natter course on Thursdays at Ditton Library in Widnes is also supported by this grant.
Years Ahead hopes to encourage more people to discover their hidden talents.
Organiser, Halton Council's arts development officer, Louise Hesketh, said: “The group is always keen to welcome new members. “You don’t have to have any previous experience and tuition is very friendly and supportive."
Years Ahead is a community organisation run by and for the over 50s, supported by Halton Council staff, which provides opportunities for older people in Halton to take part in a range of arts activities led by professional artists.
Sessions provide chances for those who are otherwise isolated in their homes to come together to learn new skills, make friends and enjoy themselves in a safe, welcoming and supportive environment.
By bringing people together who have similar interests and abilities that will benefit the wider organisation, Years Ahead hopes to encourage people to use their talents to build confidence, encourage well-being and improve the abilities of all individuals.
An annual celebration event is held every November, where groups can share their work with the whole organisation to raise the profile of the activities of older people, and give them a voice.
A series of courses in different art forms, including painting and drawing, tap dancing, creative writing are run at Grangeway community centre in Runcorn and Ditton in Widnes.
Members often organise theatre trips and visits to art galleries.
