Halton CAB debt adviser to have his chest waxed for charity
A FORMER construction worker is putting himself through the pain barrier to raise much needed funds for Halton Citizens Advice Bureau’s volunteer programme.
Andy O’Neill, aged 35, from Farnworth is having his chest waxed after the CAB changed his life.
He said: “I used to work in construction industry before being laid off when the economy went bad. Thankfully, a friend told me about the CAB's volunteer training programme.
“I'd never worked in an office and I had no relevant legal experience or qualifications, but despite this the CAB gave me a chance. They put me through their volunteer training programme.”
He gained a certificate in legal advice and then completed his training to become a debt specialist caseworker.
After volunteering, he now has a job at the CAB.
Andy added: “Volunteering was great. I made lots of good friends and it was really satisfying to know I'm helping others with their legal and money problems.
“I'm willing to get my hairy chest waxed to raise money for Halton CAB's excellent volunteer training programme. Not everyone can afford a solicitor to fight their case. That’s why we need a strong CAB here in Halton.”
The Beauty Salon in Widnes town centre has offered to wax his chest free of charge.
Each year Halton CAB helps more than 6,000 people deal with more than 18,000 enquiries.
Halton CAB chief executive, Hitesh Patel said: “I’ve always known that our volunteers and paid staff are really dedicated and committed to our charity, but this is one of the bravest sponsorship challenges I can think of.
“I hope the people of Halton will sponsor Andy because we really need to train more and more volunteers to become legal advisers, who in turn will be able to help even more local people with their everyday problems.”
To sponsor Andy by visit mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/andrewoneill2 or by texting the word “ABRO05” followed by the amount e.g. £5 to 70070.
