Giant cannabis factory discovered in a former Widnes bank
A GIANT cannabis factory has been found inside a former bank in Widnes.
Around 1,500 plants were discovered in the old Natwest Bank in Victoria Road at around 4.20pm on Friday afternoon.
Police spent all weekend emptying the building.
The plants, which were spread out over 4 floors, were seized and carefully removed for forensic examination.
DC Neil Gordon, of the Northern Proactive Policing Team, said: "This has been a significant find and fortunately, we have been able to put a stop to it. This was a sophisticated set up that we believe could have yielded a significant crop.
"No-one has yet been arrested in connection with the incident and enquiries are continuing.
"Drug use and supply is an issue of concern for the local community and we continue to do all we can to put a stop to this sort of activity. Drug related activity is not acceptable. It is an issue we take extremely seriously and local officers will continue to react swiftly and positively to any information in relation to drug related crime in the area."
The plants will now be forensically examined maximising the opportunity to trace those responsible for running the drugs factory.
Officers have remained at the scene over the past few days whilst the plants have been removed from the site. The site has now been completely cleared.
Anyone with any information about drug related activity in Widnes is urged to call Cheshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
